TL;DR: An LG dryer installation comes down to three connections: power (a 240-volt, four-wire cord for electric models, a 120-volt plug plus gas line for gas models), a short and straight rigid vent to the outdoors, and a level stance. Most “new dryer won’t dry” and error-code calls trace back to one of those three, not to the dryer.

Swapping in a new dryer looks like a ten-minute job, and that is exactly why so many installations go wrong. The cord, the vent and the gas valve are all things the old machine tolerated and the new one will not. This guide covers lg dryer installation for the stand-alone electric and gas models listed on this site, including DLEX7900BE, DLEX5500W, DLGX5501W and DLGX4001B. It tells you what to check, what the dryer will say if you get it wrong, and when to hand the job to someone qualified.

What does an LG dryer need before it arrives?

Measure the space and look at the utilities before the delivery truck does. The dryer needs the right outlet or gas valve within reach, a vent path to the outdoors, a level floor, and room to open the door and to leave a gap behind it. The table below sets out the requirements by type.

Electric model (DLEX)A dedicated 240-volt dryer circuit, with the correct four-wire or three-wire cord for the outlet that is in the wall.
Gas model (DLGX)A gas supply with a shutoff valve, a flexible gas connector, and an ordinary 120-volt grounded outlet.
VentRigid metal duct to the outdoors, as short and straight as possible, with a hood that opens freely.
FloorLevel and firm, with the four feet adjusted so the cabinet does not rock.
ClearanceA gap behind the dryer for the vent elbow and cord, per your installation guide.

Do not assume the existing outlet is right. Houses built at different times use different dryer plugs, and the cord that ships on, or is bought for, the dryer must match the receptacle. The outlet must be a dryer outlet and not a general-purpose one; if you are not sure, a licensed electrician can confirm it in minutes.

How do I connect an electric LG dryer correctly?

The key is that the cord matches the outlet. A four-wire connection uses two hot legs, a neutral and a separate ground, while an older three-wire connection combines neutral and ground. The terminal block on the back of the dryer must be wired to suit, which usually means moving a ground strap or a bonding screw as the installation guide shows. This is where electric installations most often go wrong.

The dryer reports wiring mistakes in plain terms. An LG PS code means improper cord voltage or wiring, and an LG nP code means no current is reaching the heater, often because one 240-volt leg is missing. A dryer that tumbles but never heats after installation is the classic sign. Shut the breaker off before opening the terminal cover, and if you are not comfortable working in the terminal block, use an electrician.

How do I connect an LG gas dryer safely?

A gas dryer needs both a gas line and power. The gas connection goes through a manual shutoff valve and a listed flexible connector, and every joint must be tested for leaks with a soap-and-water solution, never a flame. After the dryer is connected, open the valve, run a cycle and watch for ignition. If you smell gas at any point, close the valve, stop, ventilate the room and call your gas utility or a qualified installer before going further.

The dryer reports an ignition or supply problem as GAS. On a new installation that most often means the valve is not fully open, air is still in the line, or the supply is not reaching the burner. Because the work involves a combustible fuel, the connection and the leak check are worth leaving to a qualified installer even when you do the rest yourself.

How should the dryer vent be installed?

The vent is the part most people underestimate. Use rigid metal duct, not plastic or foil accordion, because ribbed material traps lint and crushes easily. Keep the run short, with as few elbows as possible, and make sure the outdoor hood flap opens freely when the dryer runs. Do not terminate in an attic, a crawlspace or the garage. Every bend, foot of duct and crushed section adds resistance, and the dryer measures that resistance.

LG dryers have a sensor system that reports duct restriction as a percentage. The codes d75 and d80 are warnings, d90 means the cycle may cool and stop, and d95 stops the cycle at once. Those readings come from airflow, so a new dryer that shows them is usually telling you the duct is too long, too bent or already packed with lint. Our guide to the LG dryer d90 and d95 codes explains them, and LG dryer vent cleaning shows how to clear an existing run. A badly routed vent is also behind most dryers that take too long.

What should I do after the dryer is in place?

Slide it into position without crushing the vent or the cord, then level it. Adjust the feet until the cabinet does not rock when you press each corner, and tighten the lock nuts if your model has them. Confirm the lint filter is seated, since an F0 code tells you the filter is out or not seated. Run a short test cycle with a small load and check three things: it heats, the vent hood opens and warm air comes out, and no code appears. If your washer is part of a stacked pair, the separate LG WashTower installation guide applies instead.

If the dryer does not power on at all after hookup, check the breaker and outlet before assuming a fault; our LG dryer won’t turn on guide lists the usual causes. For a dryer that tumbles but does not heat, see LG dryer not heating. When the problem is outside what you can safely test, LG dryer repair and scheduling a visit are the next step.

Should I choose a vented or a heat pump dryer for my room?

If you cannot run a vent to the outdoors, the decision changes. A heat pump dryer does not need one, and our LG vented versus heat pump dryer comparison covers the trade-offs. If you can vent, a vented electric or gas model is the simpler machine, provided you give it the short, straight duct it needs.

Frequently asked questions
What outlet does an LG electric dryer need?
A dedicated 240-volt dryer outlet, with a cord that matches it, either four-wire or three-wire. The terminal block on the dryer must be wired to suit the cord, so follow the installation guide for your model.
Why does my new LG dryer show a PS or nP code?
PS means improper cord voltage or wiring, and nP means no current at the heater, often a missing 240-volt leg. Both point to the power connection, so turn the breaker off and have it checked.
Can I use a plastic or foil vent hose on an LG dryer?
Rigid metal duct is the right choice. Ribbed plastic or foil traps lint and crushes easily, which raises duct restriction readings and slows drying.
Should I install an LG gas dryer myself?
The leveling and venting are manageable, but the gas connection and leak test should be done by a qualified installer. If you smell gas, close the valve and ventilate the room. Book a visit if you need help.
